An anniversary is the one day a year a marriage looks backward on purpose.
These nine verses are for that look back — gratitude for the years you were given, honesty about the ones that were hard, and something to set your faces forward again.
Most fit inside a card. A few are better said out loud over dinner, which costs more and is worth more.
Giving thanks for the years
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”
The plainest possible place to start an anniversary: thanks. Not because every year was good, but because he was.
“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up, and said, ‘Until now the LORD has helped us.’”
Samuel built a marker so no one would forget. An anniversary is exactly that — a stone set down to say: we got this far, and not alone.
“It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”
Written in a ruined city, which makes it the honest choice for couples whose years included some rubble.
Love that has lasted
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails.”
At the wedding this was a hope. At the anniversary it is a report. The same words weigh more every year they turn out to be true.
“Many waters can’t quench love, neither can floods drown it.”
By year ten, both of you can name the floods. That the love is still here is the whole point of the celebration.
“If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

For the years ahead
“Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.”
A good verse to re-commit to annually. Kindness and truth, together — most marriages drift toward one at the expense of the other.
“Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”
A prayer for the mornings still to come. “All our days” is a marriage-length request.
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
The household verse. An anniversary is a natural day to say it again and mean it again.

Write 1 Samuel 7:12 in this year’s card — “Until now the LORD has helped us” — and under it, one specific thing from this year you are grateful for. Specific beats poetic in an anniversary card, every time.
