9 Bible verses for a wedding anniversary

Evening light over still water
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”
PSALM 107:1

An anniversary is the one day a year a marriage looks backward on purpose.

These nine verses are for that look back — gratitude for the years you were given, honesty about the ones that were hard, and something to set your faces forward again.

Most fit inside a card. A few are better said out loud over dinner, which costs more and is worth more.

Giving thanks for the years

Psalm 107:1
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”

The plainest possible place to start an anniversary: thanks. Not because every year was good, but because he was.

1 Samuel 7:12
“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up, and said, ‘Until now the LORD has helped us.’”

Samuel built a marker so no one would forget. An anniversary is exactly that — a stone set down to say: we got this far, and not alone.

Lamentations 3:22-23
“It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”

Written in a ruined city, which makes it the honest choice for couples whose years included some rubble.

“Until now the LORD has helped us.”
1 SAMUEL 7:12

Love that has lasted

1 Corinthians 13:7-8
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails.”

At the wedding this was a hope. At the anniversary it is a report. The same words weigh more every year they turn out to be true.

Song of Songs 8:7
“Many waters can’t quench love, neither can floods drown it.”

By year ten, both of you can name the floods. That the love is still here is the whole point of the celebration.

Ecclesiastes 4:12
“If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

The threefold cord from the wedding day, checked for wear and found holding.

For the years ahead

Proverbs 3:3-4
“Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.”

A good verse to re-commit to annually. Kindness and truth, together — most marriages drift toward one at the expense of the other.

Psalm 90:14
“Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”

A prayer for the mornings still to come. “All our days” is a marriage-length request.

Joshua 24:15
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

The household verse. An anniversary is a natural day to say it again and mean it again.

Carry one with you today

Write 1 Samuel 7:12 in this year’s card — “Until now the LORD has helped us” — and under it, one specific thing from this year you are grateful for. Specific beats poetic in an anniversary card, every time.

Read one of these aloud before dinner, then trade one memory per year of marriage. The verses give the evening a spine; the memories do the rest.

A PRAYER ON OUR ANNIVERSARY

God, thank you for every year of this — the sweet ones and the ones we barely got through. You have helped us until now, and we believe you will keep helping. Renew our affection, and give us more mornings together than we dare to ask for. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Bible verse for an anniversary card?

1 Samuel 7:12 — “Until now the LORD has helped us” — is short, true, and not overused. Psalm 107:1 and Lamentations 3:22-23 are warm alternatives; Song of Songs 8:7 is the romantic choice.

What Bible verse suits a 25th or 50th anniversary?

Lamentations 3:22-23 (“new every morning — great is your faithfulness”) fits a long marriage best, because it credits the years to God’s daily mercy. Psalm 90:14’s “all our days” is equally fitting.

Is there a short scripture for an anniversary toast?

Ecclesiastes 4:12’s threefold cord makes a natural toast: two people and God, still holding. Psalm 118:24 — “this is the day” — works for the raising of glasses.

Which verse should we read together on our anniversary?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the same passage most couples heard at their wedding. Re-reading it annually turns it from ceremony into inventory — a gentle audit of the year.
