9 Bible verses to pray for your husband

A collection to read, save, and share · 9 verses

Morning light through forest
“Be strong and courageous… for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
JOSHUA 1:9

Praying for your husband is the most consequential thing you can do about him.

It is also, on frustrating days, the only lever that reliably works — it changes him slowly and you immediately.

Three verses for his character, three for what he is carrying, three for the two of you. Pray them as written, with his name in them.

For his character

Micah 6:8
“He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

The whole job description in one verse. Just, merciful, humble — pray each word separately; they arrive separately.

Joshua 1:9
“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Courage in scripture is commanded, not felt — which means it can be prayed for on the days he does not feel it.

Psalm 112:1-2
“Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments. His offspring will be mighty in the land.”

A prayer with a long horizon: the kind of man whose faith outlives him in his children.

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you.”
PSALM 55:22

For what he carries

Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Many men carry weight silently as a service to the house. This verse is the invitation to set it down somewhere strong enough to hold it.

Psalm 55:22
“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.”

Cast is a throwing word — not a polite handover. Pray he learns to throw.

Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”

Note the descent: fly, run, walk. Most seasons of a man’s life are walking seasons, and the promise covers those too.

For your marriage

Ephesians 5:25
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her.”

The highest bar in scripture, set for him. Praying it for him is kinder than quoting it at him.

Colossians 3:19
“Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.”

Bitterness is the quiet occupational hazard of a long marriage. This prayer is preventative maintenance.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14
“Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong! Let all that you do be done in love.”

Five short commands that make a good morning text. Strength, aimed at love — the whole assignment.

Carry one with you today

Send him 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 today with nothing added — five commands, no commentary. It reads like a coach’s note, and most husbands hear coach better than sermon.

How to use these verses

Pick one verse per week and pray it daily with his name in it — “Let all that Mark does be done in love.” Praying scripture keeps the prayer from drifting into a list of corrections, which he will feel even if he never hears it.

A PRAYER FOR MY HUSBAND

God, make him just, merciful, and humble, and let him know it is you making him so. Carry what he will not admit he is carrying. Keep bitterness far from him, and let everything he does be done in love — starting with what he does at home. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pray for my husband using scripture?

Take one verse and put his name in it — “Let all that James does be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). One verse per week, prayed daily, goes deeper than a new verse every day.

What is a good verse to send my husband before work?

Joshua 1:9 for a hard day, Psalm 55:22 for a heavy one, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 for an ordinary one. Send the verse alone — no application attached.

Which Bible verse describes a good husband?

Ephesians 5:25 sets the standard — love that gives itself up — and Micah 6:8 describes the character underneath it: just, merciful, humble. Colossians 3:19 adds the unglamorous daily discipline: no bitterness.

Should I tell my husband I’m praying for him?

Usually yes, but tell him what you are praying, not what you are praying he will fix. “I prayed Isaiah 40:31 for you today” encourages; “I’m praying about your temper” is a review disguised as a prayer.
