Hope isn’t wishful thinking. In Scripture it’s a settled confidence — that God is good, that he keeps his promises, and that the story isn’t over.

Short Bible verses about hope
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.”
Written to people who were going to spend seventy years in exile. The future promised here was real and also a long way off — which is why this verse belongs to people whose circumstances have not improved yet.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Hope is the thing being given, not the thing being demanded of you. Paul prays for it to be filled in from outside rather than worked up from inside.
“But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
The order is waiting first, strength second. Nothing here is asked of you except to stop trying to generate the strength yourself.
“It is because of the LORD's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul. ‘Therefore I will hope in him.’”
Portion is an inheritance word — what is yours by right and cannot be spent. He is not saying he feels hopeful. He is saying he has decided where to put his hope.
“but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope.”
Read the chain backwards: hope came out of character, character out of endurance, endurance out of suffering. The bad season is not a detour around hope. It is the road.
“Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.”
Assurance and proof are strong words for things you cannot see. Biblical hope is not vagueness about the future; it is certainty about someone.
More Bible verses about hope
“Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.”
He asks the question and then answers it in the same breath. Sometimes hope is just refusing to leave the question open.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
Living hope, as opposed to the kind that dies when circumstances turn. Its life comes from the resurrection, which has already happened and cannot be undone.
“For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don't see, we wait for it with patience.”
Patience is named as part of hoping, not as a failure of it. If you are still waiting, you are doing this correctly.
“But I will always hope, and will add to all your praise.”
Always is the whole verse. Not brilliantly, not confidently — always, which is a decision you can make again tomorrow.
“Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.”
Cut off is the fear underneath most despair: that this is as far as it goes. The verse denies it flatly and says almost nothing else.
“But as for me, I will look to the LORD. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.”
But as for me — he is deliberately parting company with everyone around him. Hope sometimes has to be held alone before it can be shared.
