Stars over a dark ridge
“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”
PSALM 147:3

A broken friendship is a grief nobody sends flowers for.

There is no ritual for it, no bereavement leave, and very little language — which is why it helps that scripture has some. The psalmist knew betrayal by a close friend personally, and wrote it down.

Three movements here: the honest hurt, the forgiving, and the peace you can make from your side of a two-sided thing.

The hurt is real

Psalm 55:12-14
“For it was not an enemy who insulted me — then I could have endured it… But it was you, a man like me, my companion and my familiar friend. We took sweet fellowship together.”

Scripture’s most precise description of friendship betrayal: an enemy could be endured; the wound is that it was you. If this psalm is your situation, you are allowed to say so out loud.

Proverbs 18:19
“A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city, and disputes are like the bars of a fortress.”

An honest proverb about how hard repair is — offended people wall up. Useful for calibrating expectations: this will take longer than an apology.

Psalm 147:3
“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”

Friendship loss qualifies as heartbreak; treat it as one. Binding wounds is slow, and God is named as the one doing it.

“But it was you, a man like me, my companion and my familiar friend.”
PSALM 55:13

Forgiving a friend

Colossians 3:13
“Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”

Forgiveness here is not a verdict that the offense was fine — it is releasing your claim to collect on it. You can forgive fully and still rebuild slowly.

Ephesians 4:31-32
“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other.”

The put-away list matters because bitterness after a broken friendship mostly harms its host. This is self-rescue as much as obedience.

Matthew 18:21-22
“‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I don’t tell you until seven times, but until seventy times seven.’”

Peter proposed a generous cap; Jesus removed the cap. Forgiveness is a practice with no expiration count — which is different from unlimited access to you.

Peace, as far as it depends on you

Romans 12:18
“If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.”

The two qualifiers are the mercy: if possible, as much as it is up to you. Your half of the bridge is your whole assignment; the other half was never yours.

Proverbs 17:9
“He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.”

Two warnings in one: retelling the offense — to others, or to yourself at night — keeps the separation fresh. Covering it is how the door stays reachable.

1 Peter 3:8-9
“Be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous, not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult, but instead blessing.”

For the awkward after-season of a broken friendship — mutual friends, shared rooms. Courtesy and blessing are achievable even where closeness is not.

Carry one with you today

Take Romans 12:18 today and do the audit: what is actually up to you? Usually it is one message, one apology for your share, or one retelling you stop repeating. Do your half and sleep.

How to use these verses

Read the first group until you feel understood, the second until you can pray for them by name without editorializing, and the third when you are deciding what to do. That order matters — forgiveness attempted before the hurt is named tends not to hold.

Deeper on the middle step: verses about forgiveness. For what friendship is meant to be, verses about friendship and Proverbs about friendship. The practical companion — 39 verses grouped by the moment your friend is in — is Bible verses for friends.

A PRAYER FOR A BROKEN FRIENDSHIP

God, you know which name this prayer is about. Heal what this broke in me, keep bitterness from moving in, and help me do the part that is mine — fully, and only that part. If restoration is possible, make a way; if it is not, make peace. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about friends who hurt you?

It takes the wound seriously — Psalm 55 is an entire psalm about betrayal by a close friend — and then prescribes forgiveness (Colossians 3:13) and de-escalation (Proverbs 17:9). It never says the hurt didn’t matter.

Do I have to reconcile with a friend who hurt me?

Forgiveness is commanded; reconciliation takes two. Romans 12:18 limits your obligation to what is possible and what depends on you. You can release the debt fully while rebuilding trust slowly, or not at all if the person remains unsafe.

How do I stop replaying what my friend did?

Proverbs 17:9 names the mechanism — repeating a matter separates best friends, including repeating it to yourself. Each replay is a retelling. Practically: pray it once more, thoroughly, then treat further replays as a cue to pray for them by name instead.

When is it right to let a friendship go?

When peace “as far as it depends on you” has been genuinely done and the relationship still requires ongoing harm to maintain. 1 Peter 3:9 shows the posture toward a former friend: no retaliation, courtesy, blessing — distance without malice.
